Comedy skits: two people, one twist

A skit borrows a situation everyone knows: a DMV counter, a breakup dinner, a neighbour on a bike. The joke comes from the characters and a twist in the last line, not from clever dialogue. We wrote and made a set of these as our own ads. This is what we learned.

The structure

Ten to fifteen seconds, two or three people, one place. The setup is a normal situation. The turn is something that does not fit. The last line is an understatement or a whisper. At a DMV counter, a clerk: “It says here you run a media company. You’re one person.” “I am one person.” “Thirty videos a week. Who films them?” “Nobody.” He leans in and whispers: “…What’s the app?”

Status and mismatch

The strongest turns swap status or put something where it does not belong. A man dressed as a video-editing timeline gets dumped at a candlelit dinner. A masked superhero has retired to a desk job at a small agency. A lawyer’s whole defence is “they’re sound lads, to be fair”, and the judge dismisses the case. One understated line beats a list of jokes.

Make one in ViewPress

Type the script as you want it said, with each speaker: “A 12-second skit at a DMV counter, one take. Clerk, 55, deadpan, glasses. Applicant, 34. Clerk: ‘Ma’am. It says here you run a media company. You’re one person.’ Her: ‘I am one person.’ Clerk: ‘Thirty videos a week. Who films them?’ Her: ‘Nobody.’ Clerk leans in and whispers: ‘…What’s the app?’” The agent counts the words against the length and tells you if the lines do not fit. Approve the start frame with both people in it before the clip is made.

Cast and setting

Ordinary-looking people in a real place with real light: an office under fluorescent tubes, a garage, a restaurant. A two-shot with both faces visible lets one take carry the whole exchange. For an absurd character, like the timeline costume or the retired hero, describe the costume in the start frame so it stays the same.

Delivery

Ask for fast, natural delivery, with each line spoken once. Leave a beat before the last line: the pause is part of the joke. If a take repeats a line or gives it to the wrong person, make that scene again from the same frame instead of rewriting the script.

Pitfalls

Too many words for the length: about 3 words a second. Explaining the joke after the punchline. Famous faces and real brands. And jokes that only one fandom gets: the skit should land for someone who has never seen your channel.

Frequently asked

Puppets or people?

Both work. Felt puppets and claymation give a deliberate style and hide small lip-sync faults. People make it feel like a real clip.

Can a skit become a series?

Keep the characters and the place and change the situation. The clerk at the counter can meet a new applicant every week.
